Government Open! But Is It The Same? (Blog 4)

    The government is finally open for business again, but is it back to the way it's supposed to be?  According to the Think Progress article Not Everything Is Back To Normal Now That The Shutdown Is Over by Bryce Covert and Alan Pyke, which was posted 10-17-13 (Thursday),  informs us that countless companies and people have lost tons of money and are quite upset about it.  I totally agree that the government made a poor choice of shutting down for a while.  Then we're told that they're only open until January 15, due to Obama's signing of a bill that will fund the government until that time.  What's the point in having a government when they're not doing their job correctly?

    Is this information in the article true or false?  I'd believe it to be true because the government has caused trouble for everyone.  Companies can't have people work overtime because the companies don't have the money to allow that to happen.  The government is at fault for all the money issues, companies struggling, and so on.  Lajuanna Russell, a small business owner, says in the article, "We're going to be paid late for everything," and, "based on everything that I have heard, the work should still come to us."  The article includes that the government could take up to six weeks or more to catch up on everything.  To me, I think that's just ridiculous.  You would think that they would at least put a lot of effort to getting "back in the game".
    Even if the government is up and running again, doesn't mean that processes are running smoothly.  Things are held up, or blocked, because the government needs to catch up to speed with everything.  This article has the knowledge about the government not doing so well right now, but it's the truth and they need to do something about it.  I believe the more open the government is to trying to fix things, the better everyone will get along.  Thinking rationally about what should or should not happen is the basics of following order.  Getting organized and playing along well with everyone is the best thing that we can do right now to get everything situated.  It's not going to be easy though.

Is the Government Really Settling Things? (Blog Stage 3)

            I researched about how the government is going to settle things with it shutting down and all due to disagreement of Obamacare.  President Obama wanted everyone to have this health care but others seemed to disagree with him due to people not possibly being able to afford it, or just being a little outrageous to force upon people.

          The argument seems to be about President Obama wanting to raise the debt ceiling but Congress won’t allow it unless they authorize him to do so.  The Article is called Our Outlaw President?,which was posted on September 30 of this year, basically argues about raising the debt.  This article .  If Congress won’t allow it to increase, then Obama might have to break a law.  The question is, which law would he have to break to be able to make it happen?

            Well, from what I can see is that if the president is willing to do something so extreme, what would be the catch?  Will it make us suffer more or will it actually help a little bit?  The article states, “In 2011, when Congress last flirted with not raising the debt ceiling, lawyers disagreed.”  The reason being was that some didn’t want to violate budget laws but others wanted him to honor budget legislation.  Both options weren’t good, but ignoring the debt ceiling was least bad from legal standpoints from lawyers.

            The author seems to agree with the lawyers decisions, but the consequences are so high that the president and courts shouldn’t ignore it.  So if the debt wouldn't increase, Obama should ignore it, and honor spending and tax legislation.  If we would’ve cut spending, we would have been hundreds of billions of dollars behind per year to come.  That’s money that we could have used for important/emergency needs, which would have been really bad to lose.

            Logically this would be terrible to raise debts by breaking some laws, but if the ideas aren’t getting the right result from the government, then evidently some things need to be done to get the right answer even if they aren’t on legal terms.

            Anyways, I believe that President Obama shouldn’t be worried about raising any debt ceiling because I believe the main focus here is basically getting things together and organizing certain programs with assignments to try and make the community better.  The government needs to be on the same page, concerning same results of events that are happening, or will happen in the future.

            There shouldn’t be too much conflict or disagreements to make the government to just completely shut down for several days.  That seems like a “give up” action to me.  Instead of trying to resolve with reasonable ideas of good conclusions, they just decide to shut down.  There could be good things to when they come back on.  It can be like starting new, and hopefully being more rational in their decisions this time.

Gun Safety (Blog Stage 2)

   

Gun Control is becoming a very big issue these days.  Recently there was a shooting that killed many people at the Washington Navy Yard.  Obama, knowing of this terrible incident, didn't even try to discuss the Gun-Control Debate.  Due to this issue, guns are being questioned more than ever about their significance and safety pros (good things) and cons (bad things) about them.  Guns are not only an item for “safety first” reasons, but they are an item of killing, which is a safety issue.  Discussing the safeties of this possible murder-like weapon should be brought to everyone's attention.  Conventional Wisdom And The (Latest) Death of Gun Safety is an important article because it tells us about the recent events of guns and has information about opinions on the gun control matter.  I highly encourage people to read this article and stay in touch with their ability to check what's happening now because knowing will help everyone understand better in the future.

Stage One Blog

Hello there.  My name is Crystal Reese.  I'm taking classes at ACC (obviously) to get my core classes out of the way.  Once I have done that, I will transfer to a University.  Not sure which University yet but I'm hoping it's one somewhat close to home.  Based on my Political Ideology, I seem to be a Libertarian.  I don't think I've voted yet even though I'm 19 years old now (kind of sad maybe but I really don't care).  I'm taking this class because it's one of the core classes I need to take and I will do everything in my power to pass (I apologize in advance, but I don't care about anything having to do with history or politics because that's the kind of person I am).  I'm hoping that I will learn a few things in this class that I probably have never thought about before (which is most likely because I didn't do so well on the civics and current events quizzes).

 In conclusion, this is me and can't wait to get the hang of college because this is my first semester in ACC.  It's exciting and can't wait to get started, try and study well, and pass!  Thank you.
